Will Google +1s help your ranking?

There was a bit of controversy last week over an article published by Forbes and then pulled. The article was entitled: "Stick Google +1 Buttons on Your Pages, Or Search Traffic Dies". Raven Tools's Jon Henshaw spotted the article before it vanished and even managed to find a cached copy of the article. He posted it on the Raven Tools Blog:
Forbes reports that Google Plus will be universal ranking signal…then pulls the article?
Written by Jon Henshaw

He updated that the Forbes reporter shared the article on her Google+ Profile with this discalimer in fron of it: "Google +1s will be incorporated into search and not just the +1s from your friends. Google is encouraging publishers to add the +1 buttons to their pages, ostensibly to encourage social sharing, but the more important incentive from the publishing side — given that the Google Plus community is still small — is not to get punished in search results. Facebook has forced publishers’ hands in the past too, to add the Like button, but because of their huge customer base, not based on a crucial search tool. I wonder if there will be any pushback? It could be seen as the company using its dominance in search to force its social network on folks — in a passive and friendly way."

That post is still on Kashmir Hill's Google + page, but the article has again vanished. There is much controversy and speculation over whether it was pulled because it was incorrect information or whether Google wanted the information removed.

What do you think? Are you adding Google+ buttons to your sites?
