Controversy! Should Twitter Remove Foul Language & Offensive Topics from Trending?

What is all the controversy about now? Over the weekend #ReasonsToBeatYourGirlfriend was [inexplicably] trending on twitter. Then the petitions to take it off and all the attention that the meme was getting added to the trending with more people using the hashtag protesting it or asking Twitter to remove it. Twitters response from CEO @dickc: "[URL="http://twitter.com/#!/dickc/status/97686216681594880"]the trends are algorithmic, not chosen by us but we edit out any w/ obscenities & I'd like to see clearly offensive out too[/URL]"

What!? They have been editing out trending obscenities all this time? Why? This reply caused even more controversy about[URL="http://twitter.com/#!/MrAlanCooper/status/97841127549440000"] free speech[/URL] and whether Twitter should be editing anything at all.

It also explains [at least to this reporter] how and why #f@#$YouWashington has not been trending for the last several weeks!
