Pentagon to Begin Monitoring Social Media

The Pentagon will begin tracking social media mentions and memes in an effort to stay on top of movements and campaigns online before they get big. [URL="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=154306&nid=129054"]Mediapost[/URL] reported that the division of the government that is behind other high tech gadgets and secretive initiatives, will be developing software to stay on top of and allow the Pentagon to counteract, prevent or react to movements and organizations world wide.

"The general goal of the Social Media in Strategic Communications (SMISC) program is to develop a new science of social networks built on an emerging technology base" that can "detect, classify, measure and track... formation, development and spread of ideas and concepts," including "purposeful or deceptive messaging and information"; "recognize persuasion campaign structures and influence operations across social media sites and communities"; "identify participants and intent, and measure effects of persuasion campaigns"; and "counter messaging of detected adversary influence operations."
