Google's New Search: Conquering the World [Wide Web] and Making Enemies

Rate this Entry
As if Google was not already the powerhouse of the Internet, after yesterday's Google Search Plus Your World release, it definitely is now. The Internet is all abuzz with stories of how Google is "totally going to change the way the web works", merging search and social together, among many other comments and observations about the new search integration. So all of the marketers are reeling from the change, scrambling to figure out and write about what this means for SEO and search, Twitter came right out and objected to the change in a statement:

"Often, they want to know more about world events and breaking news. Twitter has emerged as a vital source of this real-time information, with more than 100 million users sending 250 million Tweets every day on virtually every topic. As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter; as a result, Twitter accounts and Tweets are often the most relevant results.
We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users"

It is, no doubt, a strong statement and obvious that Twitter feels threatened as they should. The change made Twitter and Facebook as well as every other social network less important to Google. Is the change good for "people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users"? Only time will tell, but all the eggs certainly are in one basket now.
