Social Reader Facebook Apps Causing Decline in Readership

Rate this Entry
The use of social reader applications on Facebook by news outlets is starting to shoot themselves in the foot. It turns out that most Facebook users don't like being forced into an application just to read an article on a publication site. Forcing the user to sign up for the app before letting them see the article just lends itself to a really bad user experience. As Facebook users are growing more and more wary over how much control they need to have regarding what is posted on their walls and the application permissions are often too loose or unclear. BuzzFeed.com shows specific stats on many sites with social reader applications on Facebook clearly mapping out the daily user decline rates for The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Daily Motion. It will be interesting to see what social reader sites do to combat this trend of declining daily users.

What do you think? Do you use social reader applications or avoid them altogether?
